Buster Keeton added order explosives
Needful ThingsDanforth “Buster” Keeton’s additional dynamite order converts an ordinary public-works requisition into a concealed step in the plot to attack Castle Rock. By increasing the purchase and ensuring the explosives will be kept in a shed he can access, Keeton uses municipal authority not to oversee a road project but to place a large stockpile within reach of himself and his allies.
Administrative Cover
The transaction arrives as a fund-release form submitted by Deke Bradford, who requests $940 for sixteen cases of dynamite from Case Construction and Supply in Lewiston. The stated purpose is plausible and specific: a granite ridge at the gravel pit on Town Road #5 blocks access to more gravel, and blasting it before winter would avoid buying gravel from Norway. Deke’s note says the work could begin Wednesday and offers to show the site to anyone from the Selectmen’s Office. The public-works explanation gives the request a credible civic appearance, even as the order is being redirected toward a different purpose.
Keeton Alters the Order
Keeton reads the explanation twice while the clerk, Ariadne, waits. He changes the requested amount from $940 to $1,400, adds that at least twenty cases should be obtained while supplies are good, initials both alterations, and signs the form beneath Deke’s signature. The increase is not a clerical correction: it expands the quantity beyond the sixteen cases in the original request and makes the authorization Keeton’s own as well as Deke’s.
Keeton refuses to visit the gravel pit, although Deke has offered to show him the site. He asks instead to be called when the dynamite arrives, explaining that such a large quantity should not fall into the wrong hands. The remark sounds like a safeguard, but its irony is sharpened by what he knows: the explosives are intended for the violence he is helping prepare. Ariadne leaves uneasy, finding something creepy in his smile.
From Public Funds to a Stockpile
The order’s civic cover matters because Keeton is already using his position and access to town finances for private ends. Earlier, gambling losses led him to take $100 from the petty-cash fund to conceal a shortfall in the checking account. As the losses continued, he turned to a bookie and larger bets, while a state audit threatened to examine the town’s tax records, revenues, expenses, law-enforcement budgets, road-maintenance accounts, and other public books. One of the warning slips he obsessively treated as evidence of persecution displayed the word “EMBEZZLEMENT.” Against this background, the new requisition extends his misuse of public resources from money to explosives.
Keeton increases the order from sixteen cases to at least twenty, specifically identifying Taggart Hi-Impact dynamite. He tells Ariadne to have Deke call him when the shipment arrives; the narrative establishes that the explosives will be kept in the town’s Public Works shed, to which Keeton has a key. The form therefore does more than authorize a purchase: it helps ensure that the stockpile will be stored in a place he can reach.
Connection to the Town’s Destruction
By the time he approves the altered requisition, Keeton’s view of events has been reshaped by his belief that hostile forces are pursuing him. He believes that he and Leland Gaunt understand the people he calls “Them” and will make a formidable team. That delusion does not erase his practical role: he deliberately expands the quantity, declines a site inspection, and anticipates the explosives’ arrival. His conduct joins conspiratorial thinking to concrete municipal decisions.
The order thus marks a transition from Keeton’s earlier financial misconduct to participation in a plan capable of endangering the whole town. A gravel-pit job supplies the administrative pretext; his altered figures and access to the Public Works shed supply the means. His confident thought that almost anything could happen once twenty cases were stored there gives the transaction its full consequence: public infrastructure has been turned into a covert arsenal for Castle Rock’s coming violence.
